Fantastic statement!
This is an excellent piece. I hope to aid the fight in two courses I’m teaching this summer, where all the written work will be done in class, by hand, and as the basis for discussions. If I had 150 typewriters, we’d all be typing, but alas, it will be pens and pencils.
I can also report SLOCOM card #28 has just been issued. The Revolution Lives.
Good for you! A friend who recently taught a high-school class on “analog writing,” where all the students used typewriters, reports great success and enthusiasm. The students wrote to Tom Hanks and got individual typed replies; a CBS News story is in the works.
My college composition classes are 20 students at the community college where I teach, and over the years, I have amassed a class set of portable manual typewriters. This fall, those classes are going fully analog and will include those typewriters, fountain pens & composition notebooks for each student, blue books, film cameras, AM/FM radios, and record players. We will be reading “The Typewriter Manifesto” in class, and it will be one of our guiding documents. I am determined to help students break away from dependency on AI, a dependency that educational systems are hurtling towards.
