I am the same age and had the same experiences, although computers came earlier to our family due to my fathers work. We did not have a typewriter at home though. Visiting my parents workplaces I was in aw of the giant IBM Selectrics that inhabited the desks. I was not allowed to play with them though. In 1973 or 74 I was at an open day at Univ. Guelph, Canada and got to type a specific code on a hole punch machine. The result was handed to a technician in the compulsory lab coat Who wrapped the stack in rubber band and disappeared through a door to the holy Mainframe. When my code was run, out of a teletyper came a typed image of Donald Duck. It was my prized possession.
